These eight bombing pictures taken from Squadron Leader Masters Lancaster show
the aiming point and location of the Lancasters bomb bursts. This one was taken on
the 27 September 1944, the target was German troop positions around the
th
French port of Calais.
This method of verifying that bombs were released over the target followed instances
in the early part of the war when Bomber Command crew’s were seen en-route to
drop some or all of their bomb load to gain high when engine problems or weather
conditions made climbing to a higher altitude impossible with a full bomb load.
So this method of checking that crew’s did overfly the target area and release their
bomb load was introduced. Low and behold any pilot that failed to produce a
satisfactory image. The method was authoritarian but it worked.
