Foreword
This testimonial to my Father’s time at Fiskerton, with 576 Squadron, came about
initially as a result of curiosity on my part. Knowing he flew Lancasters during the
Second World War, I learned from my late Mother that she had been employed by
A. V. Roe at Yeadon during the war, and I wondered if, by some chance, the aircraft
he flew on most of his operations was manufactured at Yeadon. It turns out that it
wasn’t, but it did set in train a process of discovery, digging up the past that my Dad
wasn’t around for long enough to tell me about.
The process brought me to this website and I am hugely indebted to David Briggs
and Martin Nichols for sharing so much information with me that enabled me to piece
together this history.
It is dedicated to my Dad.
However, in unlocking his history at Fiskerton, and the aircraft he flew in there, I
discovered that two of those Lancasters were subsequently lost with of all their
crews. Therefore I think it only right that this testimonial should also be dedicated to
those 14 young men who lost their lives doing just what my Dad was doing, and who
should not be forgotten. They are named within the text of this testimonial.
