Italy – Pomigliano (Operation ‘Dodge’) Lancaster SW 276 G - George
Donald flew from Pomiglianio back to the UK via RAF Glatton in Cambridgeshire
where the RAF had set up a reception centre for the repatriated servicemen from the
Far East. These P.O.W’s were liberated from Japanese prison camps. The crew
then flew back to Fiskerton.
RAF Glatton was constructed in 1943 and was assigned to the United States Army
Air Force as a Heavy bomber airfield. Its layout was unique in that the three runways
surrounded Rose Court Farm which continued to operate in the centre of the airfield.
Glatton was assigned U.S.A.A.F designation Station 130. After the war, RAF Glatton
was used by the RAF's No. 3 Group using Avro Lancasters and Consolidated B-24
Liberators flying to the Middle East. The airfield was closed and sold in 1948.
Glatton now operates as Peterborough Business Airport.
This operation by Bomber Command Squadron’s was similar to Operation ‘Exodus’,
each Lancaster bringing back 24 P.O.W’s.
This was the last operation undertaken by the crew.
