49 Squadron Navigator who flew from Fiskerton.
Edgar Rupert George Haines DFM MBE R.A.F.V.R.
Edgar was born in Maidenhead on June 9 1923. Completing his RAF training in
th
Canada and survived a number of operations. Returning from one particular
operation, the entry in his logbook modestly stated "Landed Manston, 2 engines".
In actual fact, Edgar as the crew’s Flight Sergeant Navigator assisted the crew’s
pilot in bringing their crippled Lancaster back across the English Channel safely. And
for this act of determination and bravery Edgar, was awarded the Distinguished
Flying Medal on the 8 December 1944. Later being commissioned, Pilot Officer

Haines remained in the R.A.F after hostilities were over and became a career officer,
nd
retiring in the mid 1970's as a Wing Commander. His post-war service includes 2 in
command of the RAF Finningley Vulcan bomber force. Spells with NATO at Naples
and Oslo. He was awarded the MBE for his work on six missile bases, including tests
on Blue Streak and Thor during the cold war.
