with the RAF.
Fred Taylor was a rear gunner with the crew of Flight Lieutenant Sleight. This
crew were all on their second tour of operations. The first tour of 30 operations
was with 100 Squadron at RAF Grimsby (Waltham).
The second tour was with 576 Squadron, however the crew only did four
operations with 576 Squadron as Flight Lieutenant Sleight′s promotion to
Squadron Leader meant the crew being posted to 101 Squadron at RAF
Ludford Magna, high on the Lincolnshire Wolds to the South West of Louth.
101 were Bomber Commands Special Duties squadron equipped with
Lancasters fitted with radio counter measures and manned by an eighth
German speaking crewman. These Lancasters, known by the code word
'Airborne Cigar' flew among the Main Force Lancasters with the special radio
operator sending signals to confuse and jam German
night fighter communications.
