Gordon, for his bravery having previously been awarded the Air Force Cross was on the 13 July
1943 awarded the DFC.
The citation reads:
"Group Captain Grindell invariably set a high example for keenness, efficiency, and hard work,
which was reflected in the fine spirit of his squadron, and the eagerness of his flying crews. While
on operations he has shown a high standard of leadership and outstanding courage. He attacked
such targets as Dunkirk, the docks at Rotterdam, and railway centres in France, sometimes
against heavy oppositionʺ.
Gordon was promoted Group Captain and posted to RAF Fiskerton in the summer of 1943 as the
5 Group Station Commander. In July 1944 Gordon was appointed Senior Air Staff Officer (SASO)
to RAF Mission to Australia and New Zealand. This appointment lasted until 1946.
Records from this year are not clear but it is believed Gordon was appointed Officer Commanding
Far East Transport Wing based at RAF Changi in Singapore. On the 4 August 1954 Gordon

resigned his commission and it is believed he emigrated to Australia. He passed away at the
young age of 55 years on 15 March 1966 at the township of Katanning 172 miles South East of

Perth in Western Australia.
