The image of Sergeant Jack Blair when he was the first British Police Helicopter observer in 1962
in a trial by the then Durham County Constabulary. The trial only lasted a few months and ended
due to costs. It was used mainly on Thursdays and Fridays when cash in transit vans were
carrying large amounts of weekly pay in the days before cheque payments when employees
received weekly pay packets. It was Jack's experience as a wartime aviator that qualified him for
that job which was part time. The Helicopter a Brantly B2 was hired from Heliconair and the Pilot
was a Canadian called Dick Dorman.
