Arial picture of RAF Fiskerton
It is believed this picture was taken in 1945. The main runway and the flames coming
from the F.I.D.O. pipes can be seen. (Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation).
F.I.D.O, the burning of large amounts of aviation fuel by installing small diameter
pipes along the main runway and igniting this fuel as it dripped from these pipes,
thus burning off the low lying fog shrouding the runway and allowed pilots to land.
‘A’ flight line and the location of some of the 576 Squadron dispersals and Lancaster
call signs can be seen in this photograph.
Lancasters O-Oboe and Q-Queen dispersal’s are not seen on this photograph, it is
thought that these dispersals were on each side of the road leading out of the village
of Reepham, where the road at the top of the picture intersects the airfield boundary,
the road south being closed during the war.
