Sergeant George Charles Chapman, the 49 Squadron Mid upper Gunner on Jim’s crew, was on
completion of his first tour of operations rested.
George was posted on to 83 Squadron, a No 8 Group Pathfinder Force at

RAF Wyton, Cambridgeshire. On the 23 June 1943 his crew were tasked to mark the aiming
point at Mülheim, Germany, that nights Main Force target. The crew’s Lancaster was hit, either by
th
night fighter or anti-aircraft fire and crashed into the target area. Initially buried on the 26 June in
the Nordfreidhof in Düsseldorf, they were post war, interned in the Reichwald forest War Cemetery
maintained by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission.
