Fifth production batch of 350 airframes.
Second part of contract No: 1807 and the first part of works order No: 8589
Average rate of production was 3.6 Lancasters per week. Total Mk III production by
A.V. Roe and company was 2,780 airframes.
First operation with 576 Squadron was on the 5 June 1944 to St Martin-De-Varreville/Crisbeq

(Coastal Gun Battery) flown by Flight Lieutenant B. A. Templeman-Rooke.
The last operation with 576 Squadron took place on the 7 May 1945 to Rotterdam as part of

Operation Manna. The Lancaster was flown by Flying Officer G. A. Tichener. A - Able2 survived

the war and on 3 June 1945 the Lancaster was transferred to 1651 Heavy Conversion Unit for
aircrew conversion to this type.
On 25 July 1945 the Lancaster was transferred to No. 16 Ferry Pool at RAF Dunkerswell, Devon.

The Lancaster stayed at Dunkerswell until 21 March 1946 moving to RAF Valley in Anglesey on

12 July 1946 and was included in the Home Census in March of that year.

Finally transferred to 10 Maintenance Unit, Hullavington, near Chippenham, Wiltshire on the 12
July and placed in storage. A - Able2 was declared surplus to requirement and struck off charge
on 13 February 1947, the Lancaster was sent to the scrap yard.
