John sailed from New York to Greenock, Glasgow on the troop ship

La Havre on the morning of September 3 1939, just hours before France and the United

Kingdom declared war on Germany. Seized by the British Admiralty in 1940 and used
as a troop ship. In 1941 she returned to New York and made several crossings from the northeast
coast of the USA as a troop ship and sailing from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Greenock, Scotland. In

1959 the ship was sold to a Japanese breaker and departed Le Havre on February 16 of that
year to the breakers yard in Japan.
