JAMES KENNETH SCRUTON
James Kenneth Scruton was born in Notre Dame De Grace, Montreal in the province of Quebec,
th
Canada on the 24 March, 1920. His parents were James F. Scruton and Margaret Letitia Olive
(Howell) Scruton.
He was the second eldest of three brothers. His brothers were Howell Mansell Scruton (eldest)
and Douglas Lorne Scruton (youngest). Douglas was a Spitfire Pilot trainer in WW II. Ken’s
family moved from Montreal to North Toronto, Ontario, Canada, when he was 12 years of age.
They lived on Glengrove Avenue in North Toronto.
Ken met Ruth Elizabeth Helliwell, who lived on Glencairn Avenue, only a short distance away,
during his teen years. They were married at Saint Clement Anglican Church in Toronto in 1944.
Prior to this, Ken had already enlisted in the R.C.A.F. in 1939. He had aspirations of being a
pilot, but due to his vision difficulty, he was trained and subsequently became a navigator for the
R.C.A.F.
Prior to enlisting in the Canadian Armed Forces, Ken worked in the insurance industry in Ontario.
After the war Ken and Ruth moved to a suburb of Toronto, known as Willowdale and lived on
McKee Avenue. His hobbies included: accomplished pianist, specializing in Big Band music;
coin and stamp collecting; coaching boys’ hockey teams with the Future Aces Hockey School;
pig ranching. Ken was a member of the Masons and became a Master Mason in the Toronto
Chapter. Between the years 1955 to 1985, he worked for the Canadian Federal Government
excise tax department. In his retirement, he was a tax consultant for private industry for many
years and he continued his piano playing up to just prior to his death on March 12, 2012.
Ken and Ruth produced three children: James Kenneth Gordon Scruton (eldest) – wife Gail;
Karen Ruth (Scruton) Beck (middle) – husband Pierre Beck; Douglas Keith Scruton (youngest) –
wife Patricia. Ken has three grandchildren: Janice Elizabeth Scruton, Sara Lynne Scruton,
Teresa Scruton, and Kyle Scruton; and two great grandchildren: Anthony Scruton and Danielle
Elizabeth Doucette.
Ken was always noted to have a great sense of humour and a compassionate, kind heart.
