perished and were buried along with four of the 405 Squadron crew in the village graveyard of
Remlingen. The pilot of the 405 Squadron Lancaster bailed out and was taken prisoner. This crew
had a second air bombardier on board who also perished. The bodies of four of this crew were
never recovered and are remembered on the Runnymede Air Force Memorial at
Englefield Green, in Surrey.
In October 1947 the bodies of these aircrew were identified in Remlingen village graveyard by the
Allied Missing Research Section (MRS) team tracing the whereabouts of shot down aircrew.
These airmen were exhumed and reburied at the Commonwealth War Grave Cemetery at
Dürnbach in Bavaria.
Roland’s two air gunners were only 19 years of age.
