Roland carried out his first operation as second pilot ʻSecond Dickieʼ with the crew of Flying Officer
D.C. Smith R.A.A.F to Osterfeld railway marshalling yards at Oberhausen, North
Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Roland’s crew did not fly with him that night.
Main Force consisted of 149 Lancasters of No.1 Group and 17 Mosquitos of No.8 Group. The only
details available are Bomber Command's estimates that the railway sidings were 35 per cent
damaged and the 'facilities' 20% damaged.
Two Lancasters were lost from this operation.
