This, the crew’s sixth and last operation with the squadron took place on the 4 of
th
July 1945. Again, it was Operation ‘Post Mortem’. Further operations to bring back
P.O.W.’s from Italy (Operation ‘Dodge’) were carried out but the crew did not take
part in these operations. The squadron undertook training flights and the dumping of
incendiaries into Cardigan Bay in the Irish Sea. The squadron was then stood down
awaiting the decision from Bomber Command Headquarters at High Wycombe as to
th
its fate. 576 Squadron was disbanded on the 13 of September 1945.This squadron
being the first within No. 1 Group to be disbanded, most of the crew’s being posted
out to No: 50 and 61 Squadrons at R.A.F. Skellingthorpe on the
Western side of Lincoln.
