On this, the crew’s third operation, Ronald was replaced as wireless operator by Sergeant
Callaghan. The reason is not stated but it could either be for leave or illness. Aircrew are not
allowed to fly for instance if they have a cold. At heights, where oxygen masks are required to be
worn, any airman with a cold would soon be unable to breathe from the oxygen mask. The
functioning of the oxygen mask being blocked by the airman sneezing into it and it freezing up.
The Lancaster flown on this operation was NG293 I - Item2 and not NG273,
(This is a typing error as NG273 was Y - Yoke2.)
Take - off was at 07:06 am with the crew returning at 12:09 pm.
