German anti-aircraft damage to the port wing of an unknown 576 Squadron
Lancaster. The crew were fortunate that the shells that bust through the skin on this
Lancaster did not enter the intermediate and outer fuel tanks in this part of the wing.
The result would have been a fire that would have melted the aluminium airframe
and the Lancaster would have been lost along with its crew.
Note the squadron Flight Offices behind the wing’s front edge. This would place this
picture as being taken between the Technical Site and the airfields Watch Office
situated to the right rear of the photographer.
