Acting as an Air Vice-Marshall in Kuala Lumpur in 1946 under Mountbatten, Terence
Commanded the Far Eastern Air Forces, serving once again in India during partition
he returned to the UK and was appointed Station Commander RAF Hendon
(now the RAF Museum) in 1950.
With the Royal Air Force contracting to peace time strength, all Officer ranks, if they
intended to remain in the service stood down one rank. In this case Terence stepped
back into the rank of Group Captain.

Mentioned in Dispatches again on January 1 1946, Terence was awarded the
Belgium Croix de Guerre with Palm and the Order of Leopold with Palme on

Terence retired from the Royal Air Force on October 9 1954.On retirement Terence
became the Assistant Administrator of the International Road Federation travelling
extensively in Africa and the Middle East until appointed the Appeals Secretary of
the Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund, an appointment held until 1973.
Always a keen sportsman, whilst in India Terence was Master of the Peshawar Vale
Hunt. Besides being a Fencer he represented the Royal Air Force in lawn tennis.
Latterly, as an avid sailor, he kept a yacht on the River Hamble. Terence became a
member of the Royal Air Force Yacht Club and the Carlton Club.
Terence married Karin Sundgren, the daughter of the Swedish Consul in Bombay in
1937. Karin passed away in 1983. Terence John Arbuthnot passing on

December 31 1995 aged 89 years. He is survived by a son and two daughters.
