The following information and photographs were supplied by John Arnold from Mount Colah, New
South Wales, Australia, whose Father was a 49 Squadron wireless operator flying air operations
on Manchesters from Scampton, then Lancasters from Scampton and Fiskerton.
Following basic training in Canada in 1941, and wireless training at Cranwell, Lincolnshire in 1942,

his first operation was on 30 May 1942; the target was Cologne. He completed his tour of 30
th
operations on 26 April 1943. Targets included Duisburg, Stettin, Plzen, Stuttgart, Spezia, Essen,
Turin, Genoa, Hamburg, Kiel, Wismar, Osnabrück, Munich, Wilhelmshaven, Bremen, Karlsruhe,
Kassel and Nickel operations, (the dropping of propaganda leaflets).
During his time in England with Bomber Command, Victor married John's Mother who returned
with him to Australia. Victor passed away in the early 1970’s while in England following a re-visit of
his former airbases.
