This photograph of the airfield taken on the 3 November 1943, during 49 Squadron’s tenure
showing the new F.I.D.O. (Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation) being tested.
The burning of low grade fuel at a rate of 100,000 gallons per hour to burn of fog that would
prevented returning bombers from landing safely. 16 airfields in this country with more overseas
had this system installed, saving thousands of aircrew’s lives.
In this picture can be seen two of the airfields T2 hangars that were used for maintenance work on
the Lancasters airframes by the Squadron fitters. To the right of the large T2 hangar can be seen
the concrete base for the yet to be built B1 hangar. This hangar would be used by the Avro
workforce detached from RAF Braicebridge Heath (to the south of Lincoln), were Avro would
undertake more complex repairs to the Lancaster airframes.
