This Bf 110-4/R6 is the same type that was flown that night by Hauptmann Paul
Szameitat. It is on display at the Royal Air Force Museum at Hendon, North London.
Messerschmitt Bf-110G-4/R6 (730301 'D5+RL' later 8479M). Designed as a long-
range escort fighter in 1939, it had a crew of three and could reach 342mph
(550kmh). It first saw service over Poland in 1939, however in the Battle of Britain it
was no match against the faster Spitfires and Hurricanes in daylight, later as a night
fighter it was very successful.
The example on display was presumed built in 1944, it was seized at Grove airfield
in Denmark in May 1945. Three months later it was being assessed at RAF
Farnborough, but swiftly moved in storage. Moving from one storage facility to
another over the next 20 years it ended up at RAF St Athan where it was restored in
1976. It moved to the Battle of Britain Museum Hall at Hendon in 1978.
