The above picture shows the full width of the main runway as it goes east to its head
at 26.
F.I.D.O (Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation) pipes would have been on each
side of this runway. Designed to be filled with aviation fuel and ignited, these pipes
would have dripped aviation fuel onto the ground , ignited and in the process burn off
any fog and ensure that returning pilots could see the main runway.
Below is the Eastern perimeter track running north towards the main runway’s
Eastern head at 26.The field to the right of the picture would have held the inner
marker, possibly blind approach system were a radio beam was pointed out in line
with the main runway, thus allowing pilots to follow this radio beam down and make
a safe landing. This was the precursor to modern day Instrument landing systems.
