The Battle of Britain Lancaster overflying Fiskerton airfield in the 1970’s.At this time
the airfields runways and perimeter tracks were largely intact only the structures on
the Technical site having been demolished.
The Watch Office (Control Tower) is seen below the Lancaster, this was demolished
and the site returned to the plough in the late 1970’s. The Avro B1 hangar is seen in
this picture, it like the T2 hangar (the T2 hangar base is seen below the Lancasters
port wing) being dismantled and sold for scrap after being damaged by a fire. The
short runway (13/31) with its runway head 31 seen here below the Lancaster was
th
the site of the disbanding parade on the 13 September 1945 when 576 Squadron
was disbanded and the airfield put into a care and maintenance state controlled by
61 Maintenance Unit, a sub unit of RAF Maintenance Command.
