In April 1945 it was decided to close RAF Kelston airfield high up on the Lincolnshire
Wolds and disband 625 Squadron. The adverse weather conditions were taking their
toll of personnel, many suffering from illness as a result of the cold climatic
conditions. The Squadron personnel and equipment including their Lancasters were
split up and shared between RAF Scampton and RAF Fiskerton.
Thus, 576 Squadron was enlarged to three Flights with a total Lancaster strength of
th
32 aircraft. This photograph shows ‘C’ Flight Ground staff at Fiskerton on VE day 8
May 1945.
