Wartime photograph of RAF Fiskerton during 49 Squadrons tenure of the airfield from September
           1942 to 576 squadron moving into the airfield in late October 1944. The crash sites refer to 49
           Squadron Lancasters, in particular Lancaster ND 498 that crashed attempting take-off on the

                               secondary short runway on the 20 / 21  February 1944.

           The 4,000 Lb high-capacity bomb in the Lancasters bomb bay eventually detonated due to the
         airframe on fire and the resulting explosion destroyed a section of this runway. 49 Squadron had
            to relocate to RAF Dunholme Lodge, between RAF Fiskerton and RAF Scampton for a few
              months whilst repairs to the runway were completed. Note: the marked dispersals were
                                49 Squadron, 576 Squadron did not follow this layout.
