Throughout the period Bill was at the Lethbridge site we know that it was a brutally cold winter and
that there were several training accidents. One of the accidents during Bill’s period was a fatal
crash involving an Australian leading aircraftman (LAC Stanley Palmer), who was not from Bill’s
th
training group. The fatal accident occurred on 20 December 1942 when Bill was still at
Lethbridge. It highlights the dangers involved in the aircrew training phase well prior to their
mustering for active duty at an Operations site in the UK or elsewhere.
