Classroom instruction in progress at Mossbank
“Synthetic” or Bombing Simulator Training
The training bombing simulator was referred to in BCATP documents as being part of a “synthetic
training” i.e., a type of virtual instruction. It allowed the student to access the apparatus via a
mock-up of the bomb-aimers compartment to simulate the aircraft (in this case an Anson) that was
used at the Johnstone Lake training ranges.
After gaining their skill in the simulation apparatus they would then follow-up with practice in an
aircraft by dropping “bombs” (of different types) at the targets which were set up at the ranges
(including floating targets in anchored positions on the lake).
