Wartime picture of RAF Fiskerton taken in 1943 / 44 during 49 Squadron’s stay at
the airfield. Fiskerton village is to the top of the picture with the dispersed
accommodation sites in the fields to the top left of the picture. Part of the bomb
stores are seen bottom middle.
Note the main runway, it has the F.I.D.O (Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation)
operating. This involves the burning of large amounts of aviation fuel mixed with
kerosene and ignited. This burned away any fog that had enshrouded the airfield
and allowing returning bomber pilots to see the runway and land safely. To the
middle left of the picture, just above the main runway can be seen four dots forming
a square. These are the F.I.D.O fuel tanks and the dispersals in this part of the
airfield were allocated to the Squadron’s ‘B’ Flight of which Albert and his crew were
posted to.
