Post Operations UK & Return to Australia
Following his operations period at RAF Fiskerton at the end of June 1945 Bill was sent to RAF
Gamston, North Nottinghamshire, which was used as the Aircrew Holding Unit for the RAAF.
RAF Gamston in North Nottinghamshire had a large number of Australian and other
Commonwealth aircrew, awaiting news of their return to Australia and to the Pacific War. After the
th
end of the Pacific War 15 August 1945, it was a matter of waiting for the logistics of troopship
return to Australia. For Bill this was Oct-Nov ‘45.
th
Prior to embarking from Australia, Bill was mustered on 17 Sept 1945 to 11 PDRC at Brighton
which was a reception and disembarkation centre for RAAF personnel. From Brighton he was
routed to the Liverpool docks and embarked the M.V. Stirling Castle which eventually departed
th
from the Liverpool Canada Dock on 4 October 1945.
